4-May-06 The cache has been moved slightly to a more
secure location. It is smaller than the original. Formulae and
hints are updated.
The first site at the posted coordinates will give you an
historical perspective of the area. A map provides information
about the Spirit Lake
massacre, the bloodiest confrontation between whites and
Indians on the Iowa frontier 150 years ago. This is the site of the
Marble cabin. Husband William was shot dead by Inkpaduta's band of
Indians and 17 (or 19)-year old wife Margaret was taken captive.
She and Abby Gardner (taken captive several days earlier in what is
now Arnolds Park) were the only survivors of the 4 women captured.
Read more about Margaret Marble's life
here and here. Some
accounts state that the Marbles' infant child was also killed
here.
There is a small stone marker here with a metal plate which has
two dates on it: 18AB and 19CD. Calculate the second
stage --- the cache location --- as follows:
N 43° 28.(D-C)(B-A)(C+C) W 095°
07.B(B-C-A)(B+C-A)
The cache is not far from a different parking lot less than half
a mile away, but there is no path to it. It is a plastic peanut
butter jar wrapped with duct tape with a red cover. It is well
hidden.
