Elevation listed at 1183, accuracy listed at 22 feet, an OD green ammocan, SASO362 approved of course, a mowed walkway to within 200 feet of the cache, poison ivy in the area, but none in the area around the cache at the time it was placed. Parking available within 150 feet, your hike will be longer though!
A local motorcycle business in the 1960s bought this area, it was just an absolute mess. Creeks, trees, holes from where fill dirt had been dumped, low water area that was flood prone, and free rights to ride your motorcycle. His business flourished as did the activity here. It was private property, but everybody used it, that included the four wheel drive set. I have not so fond memories of sitting in the bottom of a creek changing the front axle in a 1948 CJ2A. Working in water is no fun! It was called Cycle Acres.
The property changed hands a local contractor bought it to use as a fill area for construction material, concrete dirt, and rock was on the list. Rather than use the City Landfill, a lot of local residents used it as a free trash dump. It got pretty bad! To make things worse, the kids who had always been able to ride their motorcycles here, now could not. At least they were not supposed to. It was posted, but they would ride in under the Interstate along the Railroad, generating a whole new set of problems, now they were trespassing there as well. It was pretty common knowledge that a squadcar or police bike was not going to be able to run these guys down, so it became a very dangerous game of hide and seek. There were a few serious injury accidents out there and always a protest when they got charged with trespassing as well.
An unhappy employee reported to the Kansas Health and Environment that a hazardous chemical dump had been made here . After several tests and weeks of digging and probing, nothing turned up. Now this area has some commercial businesses. Placed with permission of the Frank Family. Have fun, be safe!
