Geocache Description:

An enjoyable walk in historic Coke Ovens Park in Chickamauga, GA.

Updated November 10th; stage one at same location; easier to read. Stage two in new location.

While Chickamauga is most well-known as the location of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, it has an industrial history as well. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Durham Coal Company operated coke ovens here .. transforming coal into coke for use in the iron furnaces of Chattanooga.

(According to A Preliminary Report on the Coal Deposits of Georgia (S. W. McCallie, Geological Survey of Georgia, 1904, p. 36), the company at one time operated 100 coke ovens in the city. The mines were in the vicinity of Lula Lake on Lookout Mountain.)

You'll keep your feet dry as you enjoy this historic little park. The coordinates listed above will take you to the first location. You wood do well to read it well, besides. When you find it, you will have the coordinates for step two (final stage as of November 10th).

Note: Do not climb on or in the Coke Oven ruins, which are fenced off. Also do not climb on the railroad cars which are exhibited here. (But do read them.) This park is open from dawn 'til dusk. Free parking. No admission; no facilities except picnic tables.
