This cache is located along the West Penn Trail. Your search should begin from the Westinghouse trailhead near Blairsville.
From Blairsville about 3.5 miles West on Route 22, turn right onto Westinghouse Road (flashing light) or from New Alexandria about 6 miles east on Route 22, turn left on Westinghouse Road. Follow Westinghouse Road about 2 miles (crossing the tracks) to the trail head. Coordinates: 40 ° 27.047, -79 °18.228 From the Westinghouse trailhead to the cache is about 1.6 miles—round trip 3.2. If this is too much for you, there is an alternate location to access the trail. The online map will show you from Route 22, take 982 onto Livermore road. Or following the same directions above, after turning off Route 22 at the blinking lights, you can follow Westinghouse Road about 1.5 miles. Turn left onto a different section of Livermore road and follow that until you can turn right onto Livermore Cemetery Road. Park near the gate. Coordinates: 40 ° 27.524, - 79 ° 20.138. Please note. Do not enter the Livermore Cemetery. The entrance is close by. The visitation to the cemetery is restricted. If it is posted to keep out, please keep out. The West Penn trail is on the other side of the gate down a slight grade. The cache is not too far of a walk from there. Of course you will need to reduce the rating for the cache if you use this easier alternative. This Conemaugh River Lake section of the West Penn trail is located on the Corps of Engineers property. It passes over four spectacular stone arch bridges built in 1907, so after finding this cache you may want to continue to finish the 3.3 mile walk from trailhead to the tunnel. You can learn more about the West Penn Trail and its significant industrial and transportation history at (visit link) where you can also find the guidelines for the trail and a map that you can print. This cache is a large plastic container. We hid this cache about a week after the flooding from the remains of hurricane Ivan. The bridge near the cache had evidence of the water being over it. If you have been on this trail before, you know how significant that is. We saw a “mud line” across the trees in the distance. It was unbelievable to see how high the water was.
