A lone Indian Chief keeps a vigilant eye over Wissahickon Valley Park. Sculpted in 1902 by John Massey Rhind, this dramatic 15-foot high white marble sculpture of a kneeling warrior was commissioned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Henry as a tribute to the Lenape (Delaware) Indians, who once used the valley as their hunting grounds. Many believe it depicts Chief Tedyuscung, the most famous member of the Lenape tribe, but some disagree. With hand to brow, looking west in the direction of his departing tribe, historians say the statue is not of any one person, and simply commemorates the passing of the native Lenape from this region. Apparently Rhind was not concerned with accurate representation - here is an Eastern Coast Indian wearing a Western style war bonnet! The statue sits on Council Rock, the place where the ancient Lenape Indians are believed to have held their tribal meetings. Enjoy the company of the chief as you search for this nearby cache.
The closest parking is at the end of Rex Ave (N40 04.186 W75 12.955). If you park here, go down the hill, veer off to the right at the first main trail you come to - follow the white/green blazes.
Update February 2010: Originally placed by GadzuCrew in 2004, this cache was adopted by HaveBirdWillGeo. The cache description was modified and this page redesigned. As for the actual cache itself, it is a couple feet from the old location, but the regular ammo box has been replaced with a decon container.
Update March 2018: The decon container has been replaced with a matchstick tube.
