spinystars: I will finally archive this one. It's gone missing and replaced several times so it's time for retirement. A fellow cacher besphoto volunteered to place a cache in this area . That's great since this historical site definitely needs a cache to commemorate it . Thanks besphoto!

Geocache Description:

A cache in a long-forgotten historical site now more popular as a retail establishment.

You are looking for a small cammoed plastic container approximately 5x5x3 inches in size . The posted coords is an average of 6 readings from my Garmin. This is a quick park and grab with an ultra-short bushwhack from the trail near the Fort Massachusetts commemorative plaque. There is no need to trespass in the adjacent private property while looking for this cache. There is a need for CITO so please bring trash bags if you are so inclined. Please hide the cache well before you leave since muggles frequently hang-out there plus the cache could easily be mistaken for a piece of trash.

Fort Massachusetts was a lightly defended outpost of Massachusetts, located near the western edge of the colony. During King George's War (1744-48), the fort came under attack by a combined force of French regular troops, Canadian militia , and their Abenaki allies. The fort was commanded by Sergeant John Hawks of Deerfield, and at the time of the attack only ten men were able to take up arms in its defense. Among the others in the fort were five women and three children. Hawks held out for 28 hours before surrendering; he lost only 3 men but killed 16. The French leader, Major Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreuil, guaranteed the safety of the prisoners and his Indian allies agreed. They were taken to Canada, where they were exchanged for French prisoners in British hands. The fort was located near the town of North Adams, Massachusetts. Beginning in 1895, the North Adams Women's Club raised money and purchased the site. A reconstructed fort was dedicated in 1933 and operated for several years before a lack of funds and vandalism closed it. The fort was eventually torn down, and today the site is the parking lot of a retail establishment situated between Williamstown and North Adams. Only a small plaque remains to honor the brave men who died in defense of this forgotten fort.
