Indiana Spirit Quest #54: Dead End Traditional Cache

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of small, rural, historic cemeteries built by Hoosier (What's a hoosier?) Pioneers in central Indiana. You can map out a route and get a bunch of ‘em in one trip and at the same time learn a little about our past.

This quest will take you to the shady remains of Shank Cemetery in Huntington County, just south of Lafayette Center Road, Pippa. The little sign by the flag pole reads "Shank Cemetery". The BIG sign shouts "DEAD END". So it goes...

This is a shady spot badly in need of restoration. There are 95 known burials here plus from 30 to 50 unmarked graves. There are five ARICK'S interred here (See ISQ #55 Arick (GCKPB1). A lot of the burials date to the 1850's, with an active range of 1850 to 1923, although less than ten of the known buriels occurred in the 20th Century.

Please replace it just as you found it, so the squirrels, ferrets, skunks, dragons and coons can't get to it. BYOP. Park with care. If you find a fallen U.S. flag, please stick it back in the ground, preferably next to a Vet’s Marker. If you see a soldier with his pantslegs pushed into the top of his boots, thank him for his service to our country. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out. Hoo-Yah!!
