He's Alive! XXIII Middle Creek

Middle Creek United Methodist Church


This is the twenty fourth in a continuing series of He's Alive! caches.

Many of the local Smoky Mountain churches have small congregations, are quaint and friendly, and their structures have a very typical country facade.

Frequently small in size, though large in stature, the church is distinguished by being white in color with a double door step-up entrance and a steeple as modest as the congregation within. The more "luxurious" steeple will house a meeting bell.

This church is located on Middle Creek Road between Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and was was built by Cisco Williams, a carpenter from Sevierville, in 1902. For 100+ years, Middle Creek United Methodist Church has stood as a testament to the fine architectural skills of local craftsmen and as the centerpiece of the once-thriving Middle Creek Community.

During those years, the community has lost the Middle Creek School which stood on the church property, as well as the railroad depot and post office that had been across the road from the church. Still, this outstanding example of Gothic Revival architecture has remained a much-photographed landmark that was even featured in Dolly Parton's first Smoky Mountain Christmas television special in 1993.

NOTEWORTHY: Robert Shields, a private in Francis Lang's Company and officer in the Revolutionary War, came to Sevier County, Tennessee in 1784 and built Shields Fort in Sevier County, Tennessee in 1794. Robert died on Jan 18, 1802 in Middle Creek, Sevier Co., Tn

The best time to visit this geocache is obviously during non Sunday meeting hours as there will be less traffic in the immediate area.

This cache is located near the Middle Creek United Methodist Church off of Middle Creek Road in Sevierville, Tennessee. The micro cache is a camo 35mm film canister with a rolled up log sheet inside. Be sure to bring a pen or pencil to sign.

Please remember the exact place and position you retrieve the cache so as to return it in the same manner!
