Geocache Description:

2nd Annual G'ville Geocaching Event Sunday, October 24th from 9AM till ~5PM

It is that time of year again and what a year it has been! Come join us for a day of caching, fun and food!

FINAL UPDATE

10/26: Final Update: What a fine day for an event! A total of sixty-nine cachers showed up for the 2nd Annual G’ville Geocaching Event. A special thanks to all of those that helped put on this gathering!

A timed event where teams of cachers set out to find 7 new caches in the least amount of time began the day’s activities. Legna and Soulbait teamed up with Perky182 to form the Perky Legs Team to win with a time of one hour and 12 minutes to win the event TB trophy and NEFGA t-shirts. Freaking Federation (Fishing Freaks & Federation) was a close second.

The cache judging competition came next with several entries in the micro level and one entry in the traditional level. Each entry was identified only by a number so the judges could not know which cache belonged to whom. I say this only because I won the first place prize for the micro entries with StressMaster coming in second and EagleScout1 coming in third. StressMaster won the traditional cache and the overall. I still shudder at the thought of trying to look for any of these!

Throughout the day, there was a meet and greet. Four caches were distributed throughout the group. The only way to claim a smiley was to introduce yourself and ask the person if “they had a cache in their pocket or were they just happy to meet them.” Three of those caches were provided by SwampKing: Alligator to go: stop(GCKX04); Alligator to go: priority (GCKX03); Chipotle Alligator (GCKX06) and the fourth was Pure VM (GCKWYH), one of mine. This turned out to be quite humorous and provided some laughs throughout the day. It was a great way for new cachers to meet those they knew only by their caches and cache logs.

Then burgers and dogs were offered up to this hungry group along with the many tasty offerings brought by others (who made that wonderful potato salad with the cheese?) Afterwards, there were some quick announcements where we discussed NEFGA, GeoWoodstockIII. Everyone was urged to e-mail their comments on the Ocala National Forest Access decision before November 1st. This decision has the potential of affecting anybody that enjoys the ONF.

Finally, the kids went in search of Mr. Potato Head. After some anxious searching, all of his parts were found and he was put together in a rather interesting way. To end the day’s activities, RREngineer had brought a caching environment in the back of his pickup truck where a total of six caches were hidden! In the bed of the truck was sand, a concrete culvert (!), logs, branches and sawed off posts. This proved to be quite the challenge for the cachers that attempted to find these! All said, everyone went away tired and smiling, with stomachs full and looking forward to next year’s event. The day’s activities did not slow many down. I know this from the cache logs made when they found many of the surrounding caches in the Gainesville area. Speaking for the other Gainesville cachers, we look forward to hosting another event next year! Until then, keep on caching and we will see you on the trails!
