Last Folly (Oxfordshire) Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Wombles: I went on a regular check and discovered that the contents had been scattered, probably by children. Fortunately I was able to recover the travel bug along with what was probably most of the contents.

However, the location has been compromised so I'm archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

Faringdon Folly was the last folly to be built in the UK, in 1935. It sits on a hill with commanding views over the adjacent countryside. This cache is suitable for all (wheelchair users may find the last section difficult).

Despite being known as Folly Hill, there was no folly here until 1935. The local landowner, Lord Berners, decided that the hill should have it's folly, despite opposition from local people. The tower was eventually agreed providing it was no higher than 3 feet above the tops of the trees!

Lord Berners comissioned his friend Lord Gerald Wellesley to build a purposeless tower and then went off on holiday. When he returned, he found that instead of his gothic dream, a plain tower was nearly complete. Seizing control of the final build, he added a very gothic top. The folly was opened with a big firework display on 5th November, 1935, the last folly to be built in this country.

On 29th April 1645, Oliver Cromwell's attempted assault on Faringdon from the hill was thrown back with heavy losses by the garrison under Lt. Col. Roger Burgess of Owen's Regiment.

More information about the folly can be found at this web site.

At the above coordinates, you will find an information sign. Use the second date as ABCD.

The final cache can be found at N51°39.55B', W01°34.DB(C-1)'

This cache is hidden in a camo bag away from the folly itself. When replacing the cache please ensure it is hidden from view in every direction.

There is a choice of parking. You can park in a layby with space for several cars on the edge of Faringdon at N51°39.495', W01°34.749'. Alternatively you could park in a pull-off from the road at N51°39.673', W01°34.150' for a slightly shorter walk but via a style.

An Ordnance Survey map for the main car park is available at this web site.
