Hampden, Maine
Hampden is located five miles south–southwest of Bangor, with both
Route 1A and Route 9 linking Hampden to many outlying communities.
Throughout the area, you will find rolling countryside, dotted by
farms, fields and woods and only a few geocaches. The town was
incorporated on February 24, 1794. The town of Hampden was settled
in 1774 by Benjamin Wheeler after his trek up the Penobscot River
to the site where the river meets the Souadabscook Stream. The
Souadabscook Stream provided water power for several mill
operations and became the hub around which the town was developed.
Originally the town was named Wheelersborough, but was changed at
the town's incorporation in 1794 to Hampden in honor of the English
patriot, John Hampden. Many of the earlier settlers' homes still
stand, and are protected in the Upper Corner Historic District.
This town has some very rich history. In the Old Burying Ground you
will find grave markers dating back to the late 18th century. You
are looking for a mini round tupperware container, blue with a
clear cover. It says "Geocache" on the cover and includes only a
log sheet. Please BYOP-bring your own pen/pencil! As cautioned by
Beach Comber, beware of teen geomuggles during the school day.
Edit: 10-27-04 Changed coords a little...hope it helps. :) Have
fun!
Old Burying Ground Geocoin & Travel Bug
Museum
This cache is also the virtual museum for my geocoin & TB
collection. I thought this would be a perfect place to display my
box of treasures! Since this is a virtual museum, the coins and
bugs are not really in the cache, and they may not be logged. Thank
you!
