Long before houses were built in North Ranch or Lang Ranch, this area was known as Skeleton Canyon. The story goes like this. There once lived an old stone mason. They say that he wasn't all there to begin with, but when he lost his hand in an accident, it sent him over the edge. The doctors replaced his hand with a prosthetic hook. A hook he would stare at day after day while his anger built up. Unable to do the work he loved, he began to hate the world. But he centered his hate on the woman who's car had cost him his hand. That hate would soon consume his entire being, and he began to plot his revenge. His house was far enough away from the nearest road and provided him with a good cover. At night he would hike out and lay in wait for the unsuspecting, and when the moment was right, he would strike! He would subdue his victims and drag them back to his house. This house! Once there, they were tortured until they met the fate of the hook. He was finally caught in 1969. He went on trial and was declared criminally insane. He was to spend his remaining years in a mental institution and was sent to Camarillo state hospital. In 1975 he escaped and was never seen again. Now better than two decades after his escape, houses lay within 500 feet of his old house. All that remains of the house is it's foundation and remnants of his stone work. But some say on certain nights you can still hear the screams of the women he tortured. Others say he has come back, and the screams are new victims. Only the brave venture into the night.
