Prestwood Pondlife (Bucks) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Graculus: This cache has been unavailable for a considerable period and the owner has not given any indication it is being replaced/repaired in the near future.

Rather than keep it temporarily disabled (which should only be used for shortish periods) I'm archiving it. If/when the cache is ever replaced I'll gladly un-archive it assuming it still meets the guidelines.

Guidelines: “As the cache owner, you are also responsible for physically checking your cache periodically, and especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to hunt for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable time – normally a few weeks – in which to arrange a visit to your cache. In the event that a cache is not being properly maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an extended period of time, we may archive or transfer the listing.”

If you wish to email me please send your email via my profile (click on my name) and quote the cache name and number.

Many thanks,

Geocache Description:

Prestwood pondlife

This cache comprises a short walk, or drive (3 miles) around the village passing close by the Chequers, the Pole Cat and the Kings Head so there should be no going thirsty on this trail! Around the village there are still numerous dewponds which are a reminder of how difficult life could be before the advent of mains water, and you lived on top of a hill. Prestwood consists of a thick layer of clay perched on top of chalk so there were no possibilities of digging wells etc. Consequently there are very few old houses in the village and so lacks the ambience of the valley settlements.

The featured ponds are, in no particular order, to be found at
N51°41.548 W000°44.311
N51°41.312 W000°44.026
N51°42.258 W000°44.405
N51°42.320 W000°44.368
On the way you should see various items of note, a new finger post highlighting features of Prestwood, further on, a giant straw turkey peering over a hedge. Newest of all is a memorial to the airmen who died following a mid air collision over Prestwood during the 1940s which has been placed on the wall of the cafe at the Garden Centre.
The cache is at

N51°4A.ABB W000°4C.CDD

where AABBCCDD can be found by arranging the pictured ponds in order, starting with the northmost and finishing with the most southerly. If you find that the GPS signal is indifferent in this location, about 80 paces starting in a southery direction from the road and following around will get you close. The cache consists of a decorated ammo can.
