A typical cache in a typical location on the site of a Battle
Field.
Royalist troops led by the Marques of Newcastle and Prince Rupert
fought the allied army of Parliamentary and Scottish troops led by
Sir Thomas Fairfax and Lord Manchester. Prince Rupert led a relief
force of perhaps 7000 cavalry and as many foot soldiers against a
numerically superior force perhaps 23,000 men. The Parliamentary
army surprised the Royalist's by attacking as dusk fell (about 6 -
7pm). The Battle lasted several hours, eerily illuminated by a
harvest moon, the Royalist Army lost as many as 3000 men, plus
their Artillery Train. The City of York was forced to surrender on
July 16th to Parliament and the North of England was effectively
lost to the King.
