#4 SUNRISE- POT 'O' GOLD
Like the end of the rainbow, Sunrise Canyon also ends with a Pot of Gold at the top of one of the many hills overlooking the canyon. Trade items here are international coins and currency, gold and silver (colored) items too! Cache container is sand-colored ammo box.
#4 Sunrise- Pot 'O' Gold
This cache is the fourth and last in a series of four caches along a very beautiful canyon in the Calico Hills. The theme of this cache is international coins and currency, & gold and silver (colored) items. After 'Sunrise Middle-Earth' you will already be high in the hills. Go further and you will reach the top and end of the canyon. Make a turn and go to the top of the hill..not a bad climb at all since you will already be up there and the footing is quite good if you go the easy way. The views are spectacular and you will be rewarded by a nice overview of the canyon you have just hiked. The return is all down hill and because it is such a wonderful place the distance will seem far less going back.
To all those who have tried one or more of the Sunrise cache series, SUAGRFOOT and I hope you have enjoyed them and most especially have enjoyed this wonderful unspoiled piece of our desert! If you should notice any debris or trash on your way back down the canyon please grab it and take it with you. Thanks!
NOTE: While you are there be sure to take a further stroll and visit the Misplaced Pyramid cache. It is an easy hike from Pot 'O'Gold, just be sure to go the safe way.
This cache is a ‘Mystery’ Cache, in that the coordinates shown above are not correct. The actual coordinates are in the log book of the "Sunrise- Middle Earth" cache. You must find that cache before attempting to find this one.
With each successive cache I have increased the terrain difficulty level by 0.5 because of the increasing distance, but none of them are terribly difficult. The walk up the canyon is basically a walk up a wide, sandy and rocky wash.
The caches are placed in various locations above the wash so short rock scrambles are all that is required to locate them. As in any desert outings, plan your hike carefully, take plenty of water and always watch out for desert critters. There are some mines and other potential hazards in the area so use appropriate caution.
This area may be too hot in the summer for pleasant hiking but fall, winter or spring it should be a delight!
Since most of the way is along a very large wash I would suggest NOT attempting these caches on those few instances when you can expect significant rainfall as flash flooding can occur.
I think if you want to enjoy a wonderful hiking experience in an as yet unspoiled desert area you will love this cache series. I believe the area was CLOSED to off-road vehicles but now for some reason there is regular traffic into the first part of the canyon, perhaps the signs went missing. There are many different canyons around the area so I have waypointed the original entrance to THIS canyon at N 34 55.702, W 116 46.998, but you can now drive quite a bit further.
Please respect this unspoiled place and the wildlife. We see owls almost every trip into this canyon, as well as lots of other wildlife.
But be careful, this last trip we spotted a couple of rattlesnakes!
