On the morning of June 10, 1864 the expeditionary force of Brigadier General Samuel D. Sturgis clashed with Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest’s Calvary Corps for an all day battle and one of the South’s most decisive victories. There are 90 gravesites for fallen Confederate soldiers here. The Union dead were first buried here in common graves then re-interred in the National Cemetery in Memphis. The adjacent cemetery predates the war and many of the area’s earliest settlers are buried here.
The cache is hidden well from casual view. Light bushwackin’ might be needed in the summer months. Please BE RESPECTFUL as this is hallowed ground! It is rumored that Field Marshall Erwin Rommel of Hitler’s Army came to this very spot to study the battlefield and the tactics used by Forrest.
