Geocache Description:

The cache is an ammo box located at the site of the old Mascot Pond Lead Mine. It is on the shore of Mascot Pond off the Mahoosuc Trail in Gorham, NH.

Bring your camera, some water to drink and a hammer if you want to look for some minerals at the old mine. To reach this cache park at the Mahoosuc trailhead by the old RR bridge on RT 16 at the Upper Village in Gorham,NH. Cross to the island on the footbridge and follow the old RR/road to the small bridge off the N end of the island. Take the path then road S to about N 44 24.042 and W 071 11.327 where the Mahoosuc trail goes up the mountain. The trail is steep for about 1/4 mi then levels off. Watch for a sign for Mascot Pond and follow the trail branch to the pond. The cache is near the foot of the tailing pile from the mine, you don't have to climb to find it. There is a path up the tailing pile to the gated tunnel entrance that affords a spectacular view of Mt Washington valley. Be careful if you climb up there as it is very steep with many loose rocks but the view is worth the climb. On hot days there is a nice cool breeze, almost air conditioned, that comes out of the old tunnel. The lead mine operated from the late 1800's til about 1905. They mined primarily for lead and zinc but also found traces of silver and copper. The ore was crushed and concentrated on the shore of the pond the hauled by narrow guage RR to Copperville up towards West Milan to be smelted and refined. You can still find ore smples in the tailings. Galena (lead),Sphalerite (zinc} and Chalcopyrite (copper traces). Or if you wish just have your lunch and enjoy the solitude of Mascot pond a hidden gem in the mountains.
