Placed near the Waterloo Monument
The cache is placed on a hill called Peniel Heugh, which means "hill-hill-slope" is the site of a long dead volcanic extrusion. The remains of a wall on its summit once enclosed a fortified settlement of the Early Historic (Dark Age) period. This settlement was located on this site to guard the Roman road, Dere Street in the centuries after the Romans had abandoned Britain and Anglian invaders had penetrated this area from the south. The 150 foot tower on the summit of the hill was built between 1817 and 1824, to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo and was erected in 1815 by the Marquis of Lothian and his tenants.
The parking for this walk is the Harestanes Visitors Centre as there are signs stating that no cars can be parked at the entrance to the wood. From Harestanes head back to the road and turn right and go along the road then follow the cycle signs. Up a short hill you will see the entrance to a wooded track on your right and follow the green arrows from here.
Alternatively from the car park at Harestanes you can follow the green arrow walk which takes you on a forest walk up towards the monument.
The walk is around 1.5 miles and the trip up and down should take around an hour.
Not such a good one for taking the dogs as there are loads of pheasants (and ticks in the summer) and the area directly surrounding the monument has signs stating that "strictly no dogs" as there are often cattle and sheep in this area.
Please be aware that there are some steep drops around the monument.
The cache is best reached directly from the monument which will take you away from the steep drops and is well hidden in the remains of the wall which surrounds it. Please take care when you cross the wall. Usual selection of goodies in the box - please make sure you hide it properly again.
