Geocache Description:

This is a Cedar Fire anniversary cache placed on October 26, 2004. It’s been one year since the worst fires in California history swept through Muth valley. Mementos from my burn are included in this cache, which is also my first cache.

Muth Valley burned the first night of the fire. About half the homes in this valley were lost. 4 people died in this valley during the first night of the Cedar Fire. The fires burned for another week and caused incredible losses to life, property, and neighborhoods throughout much of Southern California. 3,200 homes burned in the Cedar Fire and it was only one of several fires.

[NOTE: November 2014 - In lieu of archiving this cache due to area development over the years, please enter on road to the south of the cache, see my Maintenance Log 11-29-2014 or use coords: N32 54.113 W116 53.662 for drive/walk. Please do not use the vineyard entry nor ignore the No Trespassing signs]

[NOTE: September 2005 - Construction trailer now onsite west of the cache. Suggest using the overgrown road north of the trailer along the pole line.]

This cache is stocked with real “swag”. I’ve loaded it with 7 pieces of “Alum Melt”. Anyone who lost their home will recognize this fire art. The picture is of two melts, one from my Civic wheel and the other from my Volvo wheel. I’ve punched each and added a chain for a unique keychain or travel buddy. Pictures of the full size melts hanging on my temporary quarters are on my website also.

I’ve added a special TB (TBHJJD) with the number 1 Melt for the FTF. Long and far, travels this bug and I hope it will tell of its journey. I’d like to have it return to the cache 1 year from now (10-26-2005). The bug and melt will retire to the spot where its major donor is currently hanging on my temporary little manufactured home unless, of course, a new home is standing in its place a year from today.

Parking (N32 54.045 W116 53.770) is less than 600 feet from this cache. If you park on the roadway, please for safety, don’t park in the radius of the bends in the roadway. Work your way up the hillside. Watch for reptiles, a short stick for probing the cache would be handy and a flashlight would be helpful but purely optional. The cache is a 5 inch diameter, 7 inch tall clear plastic Rubbermaid container with a white lid.

On a clear day and you can see the Coronado Bridge about 21 miles southwest.

More information is on the cache-owner’s website at:

You will find information on the "Alum Melt Art Swag" and pictures of the area from before, during, just after the fire, and now, 1 year later.
