Lord of the Rings - Quest for the Ring of Power Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

yasdnil: Looks like this needs some serious maintenance with problems at 1,3 & 5.
Suggest that it is permanently archived. We will re-instate it soon - but in a different form.
I don't think the reviewer has any concept of how time consuming it will be to re-instate in reverse - Just can't spend a whole weekend on it at present.
Sorry

Geocache Description:

Based on the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this geocache will take you to landscapes maybe as close as we have in England to the fantastic scenery portrayed in the recent films. The area of the quest is in the English Lake District.
Surely, one of the most challenging caches in England, this quest may take up to two whole days to do and as such represents a wonderful weekend adventure. Are you up to it?

This journey will take you to a mysterious lake in the depths of dark forests and valleys fringed with towering crags so remote you will feel like the last man in Middle Earth. Rock towers, like castles will unfold before you and your quest will take you into jet-black cathedral-like caverns. Finally, you will need to clamber and scratch a route to the top of a beautiful peak where a view of the mountains and valleys leading to the distant sea are unsurpassed.

The theme of the cache is one of Rings. The first person to find the final cache will actually be able to wear the gold ring inscribed as seen in the films. THE RULES OF THIS CACHE ARE - BRING A RING TO EXCHANGE WITH YOU on the start of this journey and EXCHANGE A RING FOR A RING. In each micro-cache there is already a ring.
In this way if you exchange rings at all the caches, people after you can experience all the caches as if they had just been set.
The undertaking involves searches for five micro-caches that contain an object, a ring and clues. These clues are written in ancient Tolkein’s Runic and if you solve them, they will lead you to the location of the final full-sized cache. Please do not remove the clues to be found in each micro, others after you will need them. Just take a note of what the clues say.
The micros are small camouflaged plastic sealable containers, the final is the same kind of caontainer, but bigger.
Please take care to conceal the micros properly as some of the locations are regularly visited by others.

Good luck, we hope you enjoy finding the cache as much as we enjoyed setting it.
Micro 1: The quest starts at N54.33.629 W003.04.457 at a scene reminiscent of Ministarith, City of Gondor
This micro contains a clue to the actual location of Micro 2 and some of the digits (X,Y) of the Longitude / Latitude of Micro 2 written in runes. It also contains one word written in runes which you will need to claim a true find of the final cache.
Micro 2: At N54.X4.422 W003.Y3.353 This micro under the “edge of Mordor” contains a clue to the actual location of Micro 3 and some of the digits (X,Y) of the Longitude / Latitude of Micro 3 written in runes. It also contains one word written in runes which you will need to claim a true find of the final cache.
Micro 3: At N54.20.X48 W003.00.Y91 This micro in the heights of “Fangorn Forest” contains a clue to the actual location of Micro 4 and some of the digits (X,Y) of the Longitude / Latitude of Micro 4 written in runes. It also contains one word written in runes which you will need to claim a true find of the final cache.
Micro 4: At N54.(X*2)0.890 W002.Y7.435 This micro contains a clue to the actual location of Micro 5 and some of the digits (X,Y) of the Longitude / Latitude of Micro 5 written in runes. It also contains one word written in runes which you will need to claim a true find of the final cache.

Micro 5: At N54.1X.683 W003.1Y.275 This micro is deep in the “Cave of the Dead” contains the remainder of the digits (X,Y) written in runes to the actual location of the final cache location. It also contains one word written in runes which you will need to claim a true find of the final cache.
The final cache N54.X0.400 W003.Y1.013 on “Mount Doom” is literally at the top of the world and contained (originally):
The Ring of Power
Gandalf
Dragon
Other rings
King Aragon’s necklace – as given to him by Aowen
A log & camera to record your successful quest.

To claim a “full genuine find” of the final cache, you must put all the single words found in each micro and the final cache together to form a sentence – which you must e-mail to us (do not post on the cache page). We will then post a note indicating a genuine full find.
To be able to read the Tolkein’s Runic text – you will need to take the alphabet translation (below) with you.
The photos show some of the rings and the final cache contents.

IMPORTANT: This cache will involve fell-walking in remoter parts of the area where weather conditions can change quickly. Appropriate precautions for access to the Lakeland Mountains should be followed in terms of fitness, safety equipment carried and clothing / footwear worn. Advice on sensible precautions and weather forecasts can be obtained from any of the tourist information offices. Please don’t attempt this cache alone. The walks involved may take several hours, though no scrambling or climbing is involved. Some of the micro-caches are in areas where a car can be driven to nearby.

Micro-caches 2 & 5 will require strong reliable torches and protective headgear such as bump caps or safety helmets. Micro-cache 2 will almost certainly involve getting wet up to knee / thigh height.
Reasonable fitness will be required to complete this cache and it is probably not suitable for children, although our 11 year old enjoyed it (though this depends on individual parental assessment). As with many locations in the Lakes, water and heights represent residual risks. Extreme care should be exercised at all times, but particularly around micro-caches 2,and 5 and the final location.
