Man of the People Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

bigeddy: Another one bites the dust--or the ice this time of year. Looks like kids swept through the park and threw anything they could onto the frozen river. The cache is probably out there somewhere. It lasted longer than I thought it would in this heavily used park: through storms, concerts, markets and many other events. Thanks to all who looked for it.

Geocache Description:

Did you know that a presidential candidate died in Bend while campaigning? The coordinates take you to a plaque which describes this unfortunate event. Offset cache: from the plaque the cache is 15 paces at 85 degrees magnetic.

Container is compact, about 2.5 by 6 inches, so keep trade items small and your sign-in brief. You will have some cover under which to operate but the park can get crowded so be patient. Please seal container carefully so that moisture does not enter. There is a First-Finder geobutton. Keep on cachin' in the free world...

Pity poor Frank T. Johns, age 39, who visited Bend on May 20, 1928. Minutes after giving his campaign speech as a Social Labor Party candidate, he dived into the Deschutes River to rescue a 10-year-old boy who had fallen in but both drowned in the swift current (this was before Mirror Pond silted in from the 1910 dam downstream). Since then the only presidential visitor to Drake Park was Libertarian Party candidate Michael Badnarik a few week before the cache was placed; he is a certified water safety instructor.
