This cache has been archived.

gpsfun: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

The coordinates will take you to the front door of the Aiken County Museum. Hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10-5 PM, Sunday 2-5 PM. The Museum is closed on Mondays, and all county holidays. In order to complete this cache, you must go into the Museum. At the desk, sign in and tell them you are a geocacher. They will give you a special map you will need to complete the coordinates. The acutal cache is outside on the grounds.

This is a great cache site for the whole family.

The last 3 coordinates for N and W have to be corrected to find the cache.

Which room in the Museum answers the question? Put them into the last 3 degrees to find the cache.

Q1: Louise Hitchcock lead the way to Aiken for the wealthy NORTHERNS who became our Winter Colony. Here she is pictured doing the TWO things she loved the most: Horseback riding and Foxhunting.

Q2: Only ONE battle took place in Aiken during the War of NORTHERN Aggression (Civil War). The Battle of Aiken took place on February 11, 1865 and was the last Confederate victory of the war.

Q3: Here you will find THREE devices for cooking- a gas/wood restaurant stove once used by Joye Cottage, a gas stove used in most "modern" kitchens in the 1920's and 30's and a toaster oven, one of those NEW fangled electric gadgets from the 1920's

Q4: Richard Howe was the WINTER Colonist who built "Banksia" for his winter residence. Only ONE of his original possessions is on display in the Museum-his riding crop.

Q5: WASH day was usually done once a week. When you see these TWO devices for washing clothes-a three legged pot with wash board and an early electric wringer washing machine- you will know why once was enough.

Q6: THREE WOMEN who changed the face of our little town of Aiken were: Grace Iselin, who left Hopelands Gardens to the people of Aiken, Louise Hitchcock, who gave us Aiken Prep School and Hitchcock Woods and Miss Claudia Phelps, who started the Girl Scout Club and Garden Club of Aiken.

Cache is at N 33.33._ _ _ W 081. 43._ _ _
