The Nottingham canal was built to join up with the Cromford and Erewash Canal at Langley Mill. The route goes from just below the Trent Bridge on the river Trent near Nottingham it heads towards the city centre then just under the Nottingham Castle it turns sharp left and heads towards Lenton, from here it goes to Wollaton. It was originally going to skirt arout the Wollaton Park but the then owner was not well amused with the route and managed to get the route changed to take it slightly away from his property. It then goes from Wollaton to Trowell where it follows a parallel course with the Erewash Canal to Langley Mill. Here the Nottingham and Erewash Canal join the Cromford Canal. The Nottingham Canal was originally built to take Coal from the many pits around the area into Notingham. There was also a passenger service from Cromford to Nottingham and back. The first few miles opened on July 30th 1793 this was from the river Trent to the Centre of Nottingham near Carrington St. The Nottingham Canal was fully opened in 1796. It was a great success from the start. It reached its peak in 1832 when a 12% dividend was paid to share holders. Alas when the new railway arrived in 1840 the Nottingham canal began to go into decline. The canal lasted till 1936 under the ownership of the railways. Today the majority of the canal is in disuse or has totally disappeared. The only section that is in use today is the stretch from the Trent to the centre of Nottingham. There are many parts of the canal that now have public footpaths next to them. This cache is placed in one such area.
Where the little footbridge is, a railway used to cross, the stone abutments can be seen at water level if you stand on the bridge and look down. The line went alongside the canal spur on the embankment and on across the main road through Awsworth/Cossall to the coalmine next to Babbington Village. In the other diretion it ran across what is now a plain looking field and joined up with the Midland railway line next to the old Ski Hill. Opencast mining removed all trace of the embankment between the bridge and the main line.
