This cache is located just off the Seven Hollows Trail in Petit Jean State Park. It is named after one of my favorite rapids on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. River lore has it that “sockdolager” was used at one time in the boxing world to describe a knockout punch. This particular rapid lives up to its name, because its waves deliver not one, but two knockout punches!
The Seven Hollows Trail is a 4.5-mile long loop trail, passing through a very scenic area, including rock formations, bluffs, hollows, waterfalls, and a natural arch. The hike to this cache is about 3.75 miles from the parking area, if you hike the loop clockwise (0.75 miles if you hike it counter clockwise). There are two other geocaches along the trail, so I suggest you hike the whole loop and find all three!
Please note that the park trails close at dusk, in accordance with state park regulations. Do NOT start your search if you cannot be off the trail by nightfall and do NOT search at night.
The cache is a camouflaged ammo box, containing a logbook, pencil, and lots of trade items. The cache is not located far from the trail, so please don’t stray off the trail too early.
When you find this cache please take note how it is hidden and replace it back as you found it so those following you may experience the same challenge.
WARNING (12/28/05): A geocacher who recently found this cache was bitten on the hand by a black widow spider while retrieving the cache from its hiding spot. If you choose to search for this cache, you do so at your own risk. You are advised to take the necessary precautions, such as wearing gloves and long sleeves when removing the cache from its hiding spot. You have been warned!
