Geocache Description:

Cache is located on Tallas Island along the St. Louis River near the western Duluth neighborhood of Riverside. Flat terrain, green ash forest with horsetail "snake" grass ground cover. Easy hide.

Over the years Tallas Island had become mostly a peninsula, filled in with silt washed downstream by Knowlton Creek. This has dramatically changed. A river renewal project has dredged the delta and returned Tallas Island to "island" status. You will need to paddle; swim; or walk on the ice to reach this cache. The cache is a green ammo can hidden by forest debris next to a log. You have two parking options: For a longer, more scenic hike, park behind the Munger Inn at 46.43.354/92.11.402, and walk the Western Waterfront Trail to the Knowlton Creek Bridge. Or, you can park at the end of Bayhill Drive at 46.42.907/92.11.860 for a shorter hike.

After your visit, enjoy the forest and the scenic views of the the St. Louis River and nearby Clough (Whiteside) Island.

The cache is built around the theme "survival and safety," and you will find many goodies appropriate to the theme.
