Geocache Description:

This cache is located in a popular spot for biking, dog walking, roller blading, picnicking, and kayaking. The cache is small with no room for trade items. Please bring your own pen or pencil to write in the log book.

There are ten caches in this series. The first nine caches each contain one of nine badges you’ll earn as you improve your outdoor skills. Once you have found them, you'll have the information you need to find the final cache and earn the Geocaching Merit Badge.

When you find this cache, note the letter and number assigned to that badge. You’ll need that information to decode the location of the final cache.

To earn the badge, answer the following questions. If you get stuck, you'll find the answers in the cache.

1. When did the Erie Canal open?
2. Who runs the state canal system?
3. What is the name of the mule in the song about the Erie Canal?
4. Where does the Erie Canal begin and end?

Click on the image below to see a game card showing the nine caching badges. You can print this page and attach each badge (sticker) on top of its picture to track your progress as you complete the series. It is also a convenient place to record the badges' secret letter and number to decode the location of the final cache.

The cache is small with no room for trade items. A small travel bug would be OK.

Parking is available at N43 05.482 W077 32.663 in the winter and at N43 05.559 W077 32.883 in the summer. For the first to find, the Lock 32 Travel Bug is waiting to visit all of the locks on the Erie Canal.

We replaced the cache container (for the second time)with a new type and replenished the badges on 9/30/05. Hopefully, the new container will prove more watertight than the original type. Please let us know how it is holding up in your logs.
