A climb up Woodstock's Mt Tom. About two miles, partially on old
carriage roads. Trails are shared by skiers and horses so keep an
eye out. Easier in summer, but doable in winter if less than 3 feet
of snow I would think. (A ski pass may be necessary). Great cache
for kids, but be sure to plan on a couple of hours or more. Bring a
compass and a pen.
Star Mountain is a photographic cache with an offset. A small
compass (or good sense of direction) should be brought along. Step
1: The main coordinates: N 43 38.335 W 72 33.203 will get you to
the parking lot and trailhead which is located on Prosper Rd.
Prosper can be reached by travelling north about 2 miles from the
Woodstock Green on Rt 12 (sign is on the left); or by going west
from the Green about 1 mile on Rt 4 (sign is on the right). At the
south end of the parking lot you may be able to pick up a trail
map, but it is not necessary. Step 2: Cross the footbridge and head
for your second set of coordinates at N 43 38.049 W 72 32.471
Beware! There are many trails in these woods, and they criss-cross,
confusingly sometimes. Hint: the cache can be reached solely along
paths, except for the final 25 yards. Once at the bench by the
Pogue, take a picture if you can and post if you wish. Proceed to N
43 degrees 37.639 W 72 degrees 31.743 Step 3: Onward and upwards!
At the final waypoint, you'll feel your so high you could reach up
and touch a star. Take a post in the middle, to find the cache.
Your almost there! Pace off 25 yards North North West (320 degrees,
magnetic) to a large rock, go just past it and pace off 25 yards
North North East (20 degrees, magnetic) and look for large rock by
a thick, wiry tree. Yep, a thick, wiry tree. Cache is well-stocked
with books, Inventor's cards, cubes, shot glass, Bay Blade, pocket
Farkel and a fine GeoSword.
