Geocache Description:

This is a little known Historical Landmark. ***CACHE REPLACED AGAIN ON 2/25/06 -- IT'S NOW A LOG-ONLY MICRO -- NEW COORDS AND HINT ADDED***

When I was growing up in Point Loma, we used to go to Rosecroft Gardens which was off Silvergate Avenue between Rosecroft Lane and Pio Pico Street. The only thing remaining today is the Robinson Mansion, the historical landmark marker (picture posted) and a portion of the adobe wall with the wood trellis (along Silvergate near Rosecroft). You will find the mansion just down the road 1/2 block from the cache at 32-42.824, 117-14.686. There was an old man who lived near here named Karl Sachs who did gold leaf as a hobby -- I mean real leaves covered with real gold. They were literally "gold leaves" and he would make them into broaches and tie tacks and all other kinds of jewelry. Anyhooo, I had sort of forgotten about this magical place until recently when I hoped to return to place a cache in the actual gardens, but the gardens are no more. It used to be about half of a city block of that adobe fence and trellis all around the grounds. It was also covered with the trellis to make a greenhouse sort of effect, and it was filled with all kinds of exotic flowering plants (mostly begonias) and huge lichens and such. Quite an amazing place. One historical reference provides this detail: "The Rosecroft estate, 530 Silvergate Ave., built in 1912, was the home of the A.D. Robinson family, according to Tomlinson. Robinson used the property to research and grow begonias. Rosecroft boasts a number of mature trees, including two Chinese evergreen elms planted by Robinson and Kate Sessions, San Diego’s eminent horticulturist."

After you find the cache, take a ride up and down Silvergate Avenue and down the side streets. The homes between Catalina Blvd. and Silvergate Avenue are known as the Wooded Area of Point Loma. There is a private drive called Trepte Drive, but it is now gated and you can't get down there without the access code. It used to be the secret shortcut to get between Rosecrans and Catalina when I was growing up.
