It was 1922 on a beautiful 4th of July afternoon. Mr. Hill had been planning a social party in light of the holiday for weeks. Pretty much everybody in town planned to show up to the party, at the Old Octagon house. We arrived early, to help Mr. Hill get setup. Being a young boy, my parents told me to run and play while they helped Mr. Hill get things ready. As I started to walk away from my parents I heard a familiar voice calling my name. I turned and saw Becky standing there. Now being 11 years old I had to act grossed out by her even being there, but to be honest I had always had a crush on Becky. She was the same age as I, and loved to go fishin and swimmin every bit as much as I did. Becky and I got to be best of friends very quickly. Well Becky tagged along while I started exploring, trying to find something to do. I noticed a tree just begging to be climbed so up we went. Once we had reached a good place to stand we gazed into the attic. Curiosity got the better of both of us so we headed in. I spotted it almost instantly; there it stood in all its glory, a hand crafted skyrocket leaning against the wall waiting for tonight’s celebration. I walked over to it looking it over, I had never seen a rocket so huge in all my life. I picked it up and started running around the room making swishing noises flying the rocket around. Becky wasn't real happy with my antics at this point. Finally Becky had enough "Whistle you better stop it before we get in trouble" but I didn't care I was having fun, it was about that time I spotted the box of matches sitting on the ground. Becky caught on to what I had spotted in a hurry "Whistle DON'T YOU DARE!!!" she proclaimed as I picked the matches up. I assured her I knew what I was doing. I positioned the rocket so it would fire right out the window, my heart raced as I pulled out a match. Becky pleaded with me "Whistle please we'll both be in so much trouble if we get caught" but I wanted to see that great big rocket go screaming across the sky and thunder the town with it's 4th of July worthy report. I reached down struck the match, and put the flame to the fuse. As I pulled away, a hot ember landed on my hand, causing me to jerk away. What I didn't realize at the time was when I jerked away from the rocket I bumped it just enough that it missed the window. I remember watching it take off, it was almost in slow motion. That rocket must have bounced around in that attic for 20 seconds spraying glowing orange embers all over everything. Every time the rocket would slam into the timbers supporting the ceiling, it would start another small fire in the clothing, or box, or whatever happened to be below it. Becky and I scrambled to put out all the fires while the rocket continued to bounce around zipping over our heads. Finally, the rocket came to a rest in the corner of the room. It was over, or so we thought. The rocket gave out an earth shattering report sending burning sparks in every direction, filling the attic with smoke and fire. At that point, Becky and I ran out the window flew down the tree, and hid in the black berries. I remember watching and just hoping the fire would disappear. Nevertheless, the smoke only got worse, then we saw flames jumping out of windows. I remember hearing the bell on the old courthouse ringing telling the firefighters there was a fire. By the time they got there it was too late the house was gone. I walked up to my parents wondering how much trouble I was going to be in, then I overheard Mr. Hill talking about how he knew the house had some electrical problems. Becky and I never did tell a soul that we burned down that old house, I have learned since then Becky usually knows what she is talking about.
This Cache is easy to get to, and we have permission to place it in it’s current location. There is a W. Smith first finder’s prize in there.
