Great viewpoints along the ocean from this small little-used RPV city park. You can do a 0.75 mile loop walk with half the walk on a path along the dramatic bluffs, starting at the place indicated below.
Park and begin your walk at N 33 44.419, W 118 23.625, which is the intersection of Nantasket and Seacove. At the start look west and you will see the parking lot of the old Marineland, now Long’s Point, which has been a major movie set location while waiting for final approval for the site's actual plans. Those plans were approved and as of March 2005 demolition and grading has begun for construction of the following, which may take 2 years. "A 400-room resort hotel (Bungalows included) with a golf academy/practice facility (3 golf holes). Furthermore, the project includes 50 casitas (a maximum of 3 keys per unit), 32 single keyed villa units, conference center, golf club house, a spa, related commercial uses, restaurants, public trails and park areas, coastal access points, 100 public parking spaces, natural open space and habitat areas."
The park is named for Frank A Vanderlip Sr, who was the earliest developer of the area. “In 1913, Frank A. Vanderlip, president of the National Bank of New York, bought the 16,000-acre Palos Verdes Peninsula sight unseen from rancher Jotham Bixby. Even though Mr. Vanderlip had never seen the Peninsula, he recognized its strategic location and potential for development. Mr. Vanderlip had a grand vision to develop the "Palos Verdes Project" into the "most fashionable and exclusive residential colony" in the nation. “
