The castle was built by King Edward in the 13th century, as part of his plan to dominate and subdue the Welsh people. And even today Edward is not a popular king in Wales. The lower levels of this castle have been quarried and removed by the local inhabitants over the years, since it provided a useful source of dressed stone for building their houses. The castle itself is worth a visit, N53 17.389 W 003 27.877 but there is an entrance fee. It is closed to all visitors in the winter months.
