One with a twist. The Co-Ord’s given are just the starting Latitude & Longitude.
From this position you will have to do some math’s to find the actual cache location. The method used is called Traverse Tables, and you will need a scientific calculator to work it out. It’s pretty spot on, and on doing the calculation I got within 2 metres.
First of all we will need to know some meanings for the formulas:
D’LAT = Difference in Latitude
D’Long = Difference in Longitude
M’Lat = Lat1(start) + Lat2(finish) ÷ 2,
Dep = departure
Co = Course
Dist = Distance
You will only need two function keys on your calculator Cos = (Cosine), Sin = (Sine)
From your start position you will need to travel a course of 133.7° True for a distance of 99.3 nautical miles
(1nm = 1.852km)
D'Lat = ?, D'Long = ?, M'Lat = ?, Dep = ?,
Co = 133.7 degrees T, Dist = 99.3nm
Dep = Dist x Sin Co = X (If you get an answer with a minus in font of it ie -54.256. Ignore the minus sign ans will be 54.256)
D’Lat = Cos Co x Dist = X in minutes of degrees
Convert start lat(Lat1) to minutes and add the D’Lat minutes to start Latitude to give you your finish latitude (Lat2). For example answer might be 1596.548765 mins divide this by 60 to give you 26.60914608 degrees. Next convert 60.914608 percent of 60 to give you your answer ie = 36.5487648. Use only the first 3 numbers after the decimal, this will give you a final Lat(Lat2) of 26°36.548'S.
Before finding your mean latitude convert Lat1 (start), and Lat2 (finish) into minutes of degrees i.e. (Lat1=28.34.927’S = 28 x 60 = 1680 + 34.927 = 1714.927) + (Lat2 =29.26.347 = 29 x 60 = 1740 + 26.347 = 1766.347)
1714.927+1766.347=3481.274÷2= 740.637÷60= M'Lat 29.0161667°
M’Lat = Lat1 + Lat2 = X Minutes ÷ 2 = X Minutes ÷ 60 = M’Lat 00.000000° (use this answer for finding D'Long)
D’Long = Dep ÷ Cos M’Lat = X in minutes of longitude.
Convert Your start longitude to minutes and add the D’Long minutes to start longitude to give you your finish longitude. Covert your answer the same as you did for the D'Lat,
Happy Hunting
