Geocache Description:

*please note - you will see a stack of rocks. This is where the old cache used to be.*

Please take some picture and upload them as i would like to see what you have done in the country park !

A short, easy walk (unless you want to go to the top) on hard packed paths brings you to the cache in amongst the new Cobalt Park Development

The cache is a small container

In 1996 work started on reclaiming the West Allotment Tip and the remains of the spoil heap from the former Backworth Colliery.

The large mound at the centre of the park forms the highest ground in North Tyneside and can provide fine panoramic views of the area. It is also the site of the unique Silverlink Sundial.

As part of the North Tyneside City Challenge Initiative approximately 350,000 cubic metres of clay subsoils from the adjacent development sites (namely Siemens - now Atmel) were used to convert this 15 hectare site into Britian's first purpose built biodiversity park. The site now contains a variety of different habitats for some of the North Easts most threatened species.

On a clear day the view is fantastic, reaching Newcastle to the West and even the Cheviot Hills to the North. Unfortunately the boards at the top where the sundial is, that used to show you what landmarks could be seen in each direction, are now badly weathered and graffitied and are impossible to read.

I have been up to check on the cache (28/06/05) after some cachers said it wasn't as easy as I said - they are right in a way - the cache area obviously gets very overgrown during the summer, making it that bit more difficult to find.
