INDIANA
SPIRIT QUEST #81
”PRETTY PRAIRIE"
This quest by Kodiak Kid will take you to
Pretty Prairie Cemetery, LaGrange County.
PRETTY
PRAIRIE
The church yard of the Pretty Prairie
Methodist Church has been steadily filling up with graves since at
least 1846, although the current brick church building was not
erected until 1892. Probably in 1892, the name justified the view.
Now, the view is mostly just plain old corn and the modern
intrusion of the Indiana Toll Road. The promise of a better life on
the Indiana prairie must have drawn many a settler to this area.
Among those, came Morgan Young, who blazed a trail of freedom
throughout his long life. His stone reads-
"Morgan
Young
Died Jan. 21, 1852 in his 97th year
A Revolutioner Formerly of New Jersey"
There are not many Revolutionary War
Veterans to be found in this area, so enjoy visiting this rare
site, and be thankful that we Americans no longer pay any unfair
taxes on tea and such.
At least three Civil
War soldiers lay close to Morgan Young-
Chas.
Dewater, Co E 18th Michigan Infantry
Thos. McLaughlin, Co H 1 Michigan Sharpshooters (a very elite
unit)
Corpl Alfonso McLaughlin, Co C 28th Michigan
Infantry
Your
cache assignment is to find a micro, tastefully dressed in camo
duct tape of course,(Updated to a Peanut Butter jar, Jan. '06) with
a log only. It may not be available when the snow is deep, unless
you are a vole, or possibly a churchmouse, as it were...

THE LOGS:

This little cache was extra special for me
because I actually grew up going to this church. ... my
grandparents were from Fawn River, where my mother was raised. This
church is very close to Fawn River. From as long as I can remember
until I was in my early teens, I went to church on Sundays with my
grandparents at Pretty Prairie. Never until today, though, have I
ever been in the actual cemetery part of the grounds... Thanks for
taking me down memory lane with this cache!
The cache container
is a black plastic peanut butter jar. BYOP. Park with
care. If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back
in the ground. As always, please be respectful, and cache in,
trash out.
