As the title suggests it’s the home of New Zealand most notorious criminals.

When Auckland Prison (Paremoremo), New Zealand’s only specialist maximum-security prison for male inmates, opened in 1968, it was one of the most modern institutions of its kind in the world.

To relieve crowding at other institutions, in particular Mt Eden, Auckland West division was added to house medium-security male inmates in November 1981.

Auckland Prison also has a minimum-security work and pre-release unit, a low medium security 60-bed unit, and a 60-bed special treatment unit for sex offenders.

The average number of inmates at Auckland Prison is 645. We have 17 prisons throughout New Zealand holding a population of around 6000, for which it costs an average of $63,385 per person, per year to secure. Prisons are costly to manage. Approximately $532,767,000 was allocated to the Dept of Corrections in the 12 months to June 2000. So for 2004 it will be a lot more!!

96% of the prison population is male.
50 % of prison inmates identify themselves as Maori.
36 % identify themselves as European.
12 % identify themselves as Pacific peoples.
95 % of inmates are classified as either minimum or medium security.

FAQ:
"How many escapes have there been from here?" Four (Dean Wickliffe twice, and two others.) But now there’s razor wire around the perimeter.
"Do the guards have guns?" Not now. There were weapons some time ago, but they were never been used and have been taken away.
"Do the guards all live in the houses over there?" The village was only for prison officers and their families, but now the village houses are rented out and most officers live in other suburbs.
"What’s D Block?" It’s a part of the prison for really hardened and violent prisoners. They live in very tightly controlled conditions. Each inmate has three officers working around him. It’s not called D Block any more.
