The Navigator Amerigo Matteo Vespucci was born the 9 March 1452, it is not sure if in Florence or in Peretola, a borough of Florence. Amerigo, after several voyages on the Atlantic Ocean, guessed that the land he and Colombo discovered wasn't a part of Asia, but a new unknown continent.
Founded basically on the discoveries and the letters of Amerigo, the Cartographer Waldseemuller updated the geographic atlas of Ptolomeus with the new discoveries. In his "Universalis Cosmographia secundum Ptolomei traditionem et Americi Vespucci alieorunque lustrationes” issued 25 April 1507 appears for the first time the word "AMERICA" used forever to indicate the new continent.

Il Navigatore Amerigo Matteo Vespucci nacque il 9 Marzo 1452, non è certo se a Firenze o nel borgo di Peretola, ora quartiere di Firenze. Amerigo, dopo numerosi viaggi attraverso l'Oceano Atlantico, intuì che le terre che lui e Colombo avevano trovato non erano terre d'Asia, ma un nuovo continente, sconosciuto.
Basandosi sulle scoperte e le molte lettere di Amerigo, il cartografo Waldseemuller aggiornò l'atlante della geografia di Tolomeo con le nuove scoperte. Nella sua "Universalis Cosmographia secundum Ptolomei traditionem et Americi Vespucci alieorunque lustrationes” pubblicata il 25 Aprile 1507 compare per la prima volta la parola "AMERICA" che rimarrà per sempre a denominare il nuovo continente.
