This cache can be found a few steps off the new (12/15/2004) Nature
Trail at Patriot's Point built by the Town of Mt Pleasant with the
help of Patriot's Point. lease enter logs with feedback which will
encourage the town as it develops its trail program.
The trail runs from a trailhead (N. 32 47.793 W 079 54.025) on
Patriot's Point Blvd between the Baseball Fields and Golf course in
the vicinity of and opposite the Omar Shrine Building. The
trailhead is marked by a small green sign on a white 4 x 4 post.
The trail continues through the greenbelt between the Golf Course
to the North and Athletic Fields to the South until it recrosses
Patriot's Point Blvd. near Charleston Harbor.
On the South Side of Patriot's Point Blvd. the trial crosses and
runs across the top of an old dredge spoil dike to a nice outlook
tower at the edge of Charleston Harbor. The cache is located along
the trail, on the Golf Course side between the two points where the
trail makes contact with Patriot's Point Blvd. You can access the
trail and cache from either end.
This cache takes it name from the original name of Patriot's
Point, Hog Island. It was the site of a battle during the American
Revolution and a 19th. century iron foundry. At one time a ferry to
Charleston landed in this area as well. During the 20th. century,
the area was diked and used to deposit material dredged from
Charleston Harbor, eventually raising the ground to become some of
the highest land in Mt. Pleasant. Redevelopment began with the
arrival of the Yorktown during the Bicentennial celebration in 1976
when the area was renamed Patriot's Point. Container is green ammo
