This is
a great walk along the Haw of slightly more than 1/2 mile. I first
walked this trail while searching for
Flow of the Haw which is still there and is a great hike of
about 2 additional miles.
The cache is an ammo can and is high enough to be unaffected by
high water, but the trail which runs next to the river can be
underwater during times of flooding. The trail itself is narrow and
not always well defined, but it is fairly easy and only mildly
rugged at times. There is no bushwhacking unless you get off trail
but you will have to negotiate downed trees across the trail,
detours over and around rock formations and mud/water (after
rains). You may see some wildlife and if you continue to the other
caches further on the trail, you may even see the infamous
gnome!
When we placed these caches, the river was a little high and it
was fun to walk within just a few feet of rushing water and the
sound of the river is very pleasant. We spotted several kayakers,
and a few tame dogs that must have been from neighborhood to the
east.
The cache was not hidden to be difficult to find, the hike is the
objective, however, please hide as well or better than you found it
and thanks for trying not to tear up the area searching.
Parking Coordinates : N35 43.925 W 79 06.283 This is accessed
from the Eastbound lanes of 64, on the East side of
the river. There is a larger parking area on the west side of the
river, but the trail is on the other side. Do not try to park in
any neighborhoods and cut through (with or without owner
permission)! If you don't want to hike, don't do this cache.
The hike is short and you'll enjoy it.
Have fun and thanks for
searching!
