Hoosier_Reviewer: Since there has been no response to my previous note, I am archiving the cache.

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #87
”Nix' Nicks"

OK, Searchers, this Quest takes you to St. Catherines Catholic Church Cemetery in Washington Township, Whitley County.

This area is called "Nix Settlement" and there are no less that 39 members of the Nix family buried here. Five of them are Marys (one quarter of the total Marys in the cemetery) and four of them are Named Nicholas Nix! The original cemetery and church were located not far from here on one of the Nicholas Nix's farm. The cemetery was moved to its present location and some of the older stones that were moved can be seen in the north east section of the plot. There are records for 273 burials, but the size of this place doesn't seem to support that.

Be sure and check out the big crucifix. There are also 21 Smiths buried here. Earliest record is LOUISA ARNOLD, died 1853. Some of the Veterans you may meet here include MARK MEYER 1924-1944, U.S. Army Air Forces; Dewey Sandemeyer, 1899-1976, Private, U.S. Army, WWI; Marvin Altmon, 1930-1997, Cpl. USAF; and:

Joseph G. Alles, 1921-1944, 2nd LT. 422 AAF Bomb Sq. WWII

Lt. Alles was a member of the 422nd Bomb Squadon-Heavy, 305th Bombardment Group, assigned to the 8th Air Force and stationed in the U.K. 1942-1946. Flying B-17's was one of the more hazardous duties associated with World War II. The group was commanded for a time by then Col. Curtis LeMay, who went on to become one of the most distinguished Military and Political Leaders our country produced in the latter half of the Twentieth Century. The 305th's insignia featured a fractured Swastika.

Mystery Dog.

The cache container WAS a magnetic key hider thing. Now its a film can. BYOP. Park with care. If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
