INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #88
”We were soldiers once, and young..."

This quest will take you to two side-by-side graveyards, Washington Township and Old Baptist, in Washington Township, Whitley County.

The oldest burial I found for Washington was 1894. There are about 69 interrments, 15 of which are Alexanders. A poem on one of the Chamberlin stones reads:

"Parents, thou at now at home,
Mong angels fair above
But yet below thy child must roam
'til summoned by His Love."

Look here for VERNON McWHIRTER, 1893-1962, SGT HQ RR&C Svc ASC WWI.

Old Baptist, west of the drive, is much older, with 137 souls, the first of whom was MARGARET ALEXANDER , died July 3, 1833. The Civil War is represented by Corp'l JNO CHAMBERLIN CO F 153 IN INF, and Lieut. G.W. SCOTT, died 9-9-1864. Sarah Chamberlin's poem reads:

Rest here mother in quiet sleep,
While friends in sorrow over thee weep.

But this cache is dedicated to one of our brothers who gave all, and whose short life ended in Viet Nam, just short of his 18th birthday.:

At least twelve men killed in Vietnam were 17 years old.

The cache container is a 35 mm film can. BYOP. Park with care. If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out. God Bless our troops in harm's way.

Joseph Galloway: [narrating] Some had families waiting, for others their only family would be the men they bled beside, there were no bands, flags no honor guards to welcome them home, they went to war because their country ordered them to, but in the end they fought not for country or their flag, they fought for each other

We who have seen war will never stop seeing it, in the silence of the night we will always hear the screams. So this is our story... For we were soldiers once and young.
