Solar Net is a geocache network that loosely models the solar system. It is a medium-size network that has guidelines for hiding and naming the individual network caches to achieve the system model. Jupiter the Planet: Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun. It has a nearly circular orbit. It is the first planet beyond the Asteroid Belt, and is the first jovian planet: meaning that is composed primarily of gaseous material that becomes denser with depth. It is also the largest planet in the solar system, and along with its many moons and it gaseous composition of hydrogen and helium, it resembles an unfulfilled solar system in its own right. The atmosphere is very large, dense, and dynamic, and it has high-velocity winds confined within wide latitude bands, with winds in adjacent bands blowing in opposite directions, giving the planet its banded appearance. Evidence indicates that the energy to create such turbulence comes from heat originating from within the planet. The Great Red Spot is an interruption in the bands, and is generally accepted to be a “storm” of sorts. The spot is more than twice the size of Earth, and has been observed for more than 300 years. Jupiter has 63 known satellites (moons), including the four large Galilean moons. It also has a series of rings, which are very faint and small compared to Saturn’s rings. Jupiter is named after the king of the gods from Roman mythology.
Jupiter the Cache: Jupiter is a medium-size container. No, it does not contain 63 sub-containers. It contains ten sub-containers (satellites), designated Io, Europa, Ganymede, Callisto, Metis, Andrastea, Amalthea, Thebe, Jupiter’s Other Moons, and Jupiter’s Rings. Eight moons were selected to be distinguished separately because they were either one of the four large Galilean moons, or one of the four moons closest to the planet. The sub-containers (moons/rings) should be taken and hidden no farther than 2 miles from the Jupiter cache by geocachers who find Jupiter.
