Micro Drive 2 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ladybug0048: This one keeps coming up missing so I'm going to give up on it. I hope those that have been able to stop and find this one enjoyed the stop and hopefully got to see an eagle or two.

Geocache Description:

Number 2 in a series of micros established to give beginners easy caches to find, midwinter cache deprived hunters a grab & go, plus following the caches will take you on a nice drive. Bring your own pen or pencil.

Mineral Ridge Boat Launch:
For a few months each winter Bald Eagles visit Wolf Lodge Bay and Beauty Bay. It’s a place where you can see our national bird in its natural environment, close enough to observe it soaring, hunting or perched on a tree. Eagles circle above the water or peer down from the rugged limb of a larch snag.

December and January have the highest number of eagles and early morning is when the eagles are the most active. As mid-morning approaches, eagles begin to limit their feeding activity and settle on perches. They seem to prefer certain trees and even favorite limbs. For the last few years each time I have gone out I have spotted a young eagle that seems to have claimed a snag on the east side of the road at N47.61956 W116.66913. If you are driving south you can slow down and check it out if the traffic is low. If you are driving north I wouldn’t recommend it as it’s just after a blind curve in the road.

On windy days, eagles take advantage of turbulent air currents and soar high above the water. As wind speed increases, so do the soaring activities. During these times, eagles spend less time feeding and perching and more time flying. Eagles have been observed gliding in graceful, almost motionless flight for several hours at a time.

In the short time I was there placing the cache I spotted 8 Bald Eagles and was even treated to the show of one soaring down and grabbing a fish out of the lake. If you are interested in more information about the Bald Eagles at Wolf Lodge Bay visit this web site: (visit link)

While in the area you might also want to go find the cache placed up on Mineral Ridge, the trail head is just down the road from the boat launch.

Happy Eagle Watching!
