Geocache Description:

Ninety years before Christopher Columbus discovered America, a Scottish Knight and an Italian navigator explored North America.

"In the 1880s the people of Westford, Massachusetts knew of a strange carving on a rock beside a quiet road. At the time they believed it to be a primitive Indian carving and thinking no more of it left it more or less in peace until it was uncovered by an amateur archaeologist in 1954. Upon further examination the six-foot high figure punched into the rock seemed more like the figure of a knight. The effigy was in full armour, wearing helmet, mail and surcoat."

To visit the effigy, park at N42 35.319 W71 26.000 and walk uphill on the left side of Depot Street. There is a monument describing the effigy. During winter months, the effigy is protected by a wooden cover.
(visit link)

Count the number of links in the chain closest to the standing monument. Multiply the number of links times 4.18 to get a magnetic compass bearing. Multiply the number of links by 27.9 to get a distance in meters. This will lead you to the entrance of a wildlife sanctuary.

Enter through the black (dark green) wooden gate and follow the main trail to the left and uphill. The cache is hidden under a bench. Since the cache is close to a private home, please do not cross the stone wall or enter the sanctuary after dark.
