Sample Run Traditional Cache
Cacheoholic: I noticed an excavator here on the way to work this morning. I stopped on the way home to check on the cache. Too late! This place is being leveled.

Cache is a 30 cal ammo box. Easy terrain (1) except for the last several feet. Hold on to small children.
The location is far from beautiful, but like many of my caches, it comes with a story. This story starts at the location of the Number 1 mine of the Clearfield Bituminous Coal Company at near Clymer, PA. The coalmines that existed in our area were a vital part of the economy and culture that shaped this region. Many immigrants came to this area seeking the “American Dream” and ended up finding employment in the mines. Work was hard, dangerous and not very economically rewarding. One of the areas worst disasters was the mine explosion on August 26, 1926 at this mine. Of the 57 men working in the mines that day, 44 men ranging in age from 17 – 52 were killed. Rescue workers saved 4 men and 9 working by the mine opening were able to escape uninjured. A memorial displaying the names of the 44 victims of this accident is located on the front lawn of the Clymer Borough Building on Sixth Street.
Other disasters happened in this area. A streetcar line ran through here that connected Indiana and Clymer. This was the scene of at least two very dramatic incidents. The coming of the automobile brought about its decline and eventual abandonment. In August 1915, A. R. Wyncoop, of Clymer, was fatally injured when a New York Central train collided with a Street Railways car at the Sample Run Crossing. Eleven passengers in the car were thrown forward by the impact of the collision, but all escaped serious injury. The streetcar, however, was almost totally demolished. Wyncoop was not a passenger in the trolley, but was standing in a small shelter nearby, waiting to board the car. The streetcar, when struck by the train, was hurled completely around, crashed into the little station with full force, and fatally injured Wyncoop. The second streetcar incident is less than a mile from here and involved an armed robbery. That location (when I find it), I hope will be another cache.
Please be very careful when retrieving this cache. Some maybe tempted to take a challenging route. There is an easier way!
