Yet again, LarsThorwald leads you to a spot both fascinating and historic: Pasadena's own Castle Green!
We're back with another simple find in a fun area: take a block and a half stroll south from the heart of Pasadena's vibrant Old Town to find the Castle Green... and the cache, of course!
One of Pasadena's most unique buildings, the Castle Green was built in 1898 by Col. George G. Green, founder of a successful patent medicine business. After opening in 1899 it became known as a lavish resort for those escaping the winter rigors of the eastern United States. Architect Frederick I. Roehrig drew on Moorish, Spanish, Victorian, and other stylistic elements to produce a stunningly original building; he blended domes, arches, pillars, balconies, and verandahs with structural steel, brick walls and concrete floors to design Pasadena's first fireproof building. Roehrig topped it off by tying his new building into the first part of the hotel complex, built on the east side of the street, by an ornate enclosed bridge crossing Raymond Avenue. When the hotel opened for business its two cylindrical towers on the south and much of the roof line were illuminated with exterior lights. It must have been quite a sight.
In later years the hotel became the social center of Pasadena, playing host to vacationing tycoons and even presidents. It was also home to both the Tournament of Roses and the Valley Hunt Club.
At the end of the resort era the west annex was purchased by a group of regular hotel guests who wished to continue to come to the Hotel Green; in 1924 this group of investors divided the hotel complex into three parts. The Central Annex was divided into fifty individually owned units and so it remains today, renamed the Castle Green.
We hope you appreciate the history lesson... but we know what you're really interested in is the cache! A film can, you'll find it magnetized to something obvious. There is no need to go onto the actual Castle grounds to retrieve it, and even the smallest cacher among you will be able to reach it easily. It may take some patience to get a good gps signal, but we got better than 20' accuracy within a minute at the cache site. So start hunting!
