This cache almost qualified as one of my "hidden history" series but history of the area is a touch scarce.
| In the early 1900's one of the Murphy clan built a house in
an old diatreme, the house is long since gone but evidence of habitation
remains. My parish map shows a "Stephen Murphy" once owned 45 acres on the
East of Bedford Road, commencing where it now turns to dirt, the road being
its Western Boundary. This cache was been placed in a blatant attempt to
get you to visit the diatreme and look around.
There is a BYO everything camping area nearby with a fireplace and,
standing in the bush just off the campsite, a building making a valiant
attempt to pass itself off as a toilet. Interpretive signage at the camping
ground explains the area.
The road is reasonable, on the occasions I have been there I have seen 2WD
vehicles of various persuasions at the day picnic area near the dam. The
dam, built when one could drink the water from mountain streams without fear
of hospitalisation, would have served as a water supply for "Ye Humpney"
The cache - its a bit away from the area discussed above, your GPSr will
tell you where. It is close to a feature that may have been pressed into
service as the Murphy shower, in an area where it would be unwise to let the
geokiddies run ahead and where DVs are a better footwear option then
leather soled shoes or hobnail boots.
There are two ways of approaching the cache, the more direct route may
not be the quickest or safest.
You may find it helpful to have:
- A torch
- A small broom
- Food
- Water
- A towel
