Geocache Description:

A tour through northern Jackson County getting information from historical markers that will lead to the physical cache

The North Carolina Highway Historical Marker Program (administered by the Division of Archives and History) was established in 1935 in an effort to standardize the practice of marking sites of statewide historical significance. There are 1,468 in NC with at least one in every county. District Q covers Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties. There are currently 14 in Jackson County.

You will need to visit six markers before finding the physical cache. Each marker will provide information on both the next marker's location and the coordinates for the physical cache. The ability to project a waypoint will make getting from marker to marker much easier. The above coordinates are for the first marker. The coordinates for the physical cache are:

N 35° 18.ABC
W 83° 11.DEF

Q 32 "A" equals the last digit in the year referenced for surveying. The next marker, Q 51, is 1.7X miles away at a bearing of 23X degrees true, where "X" equals the number of letters in the shorter of the two last names.

Q 51 "B" equals the last digit in the year referenced for the NC Senate. The next marker, Q 38, is 4.92 miles away at a bearing of 1XX degrees true, where "X" equals the first digit in the yardage referenced.

Q 38 "D" equals the last digit in the "private" year minus the third digit in the "state supported" year. The next marker, Q 52, is 2.76 miles away at a bearing of 11X degrees true, where "X" equals the third digit in the "private" year.

Q 52 "C" equals the last digit in the year of his birth. The last two markers, Q 47 and Q 48, are both very close to a point X.74 miles away at a bearing of X99 degrees true, where "X" equals the last digit in the year of his death.

Q 47 "E" equals the number of miles north.

Q 48 "F" equals the last digit in the year of his birth.

You should now have all the information needed to find the final cache, which is hidden less than half a mile from Q 48. Total driving distance is about 17 miles, but all markers should be easily found. Cache is a little smaller than an ammo box. Enjoy the day!

CHECKSUM: A + B + C + D + E + F = XY
X + Y = 7
