Easy walk off the C&O Canal Tow Path, a short distance into the woods.
This is my first cache hide and have wanted to place this here since my internship with The City of Cumberland Parks and Recreation Department in the summer of 2004. The cache is entitled “Under The Subway” which refers to the area beyond the “underpass” that you must drive under at the intersection of Industrial Boulevard and Virginia Avenue to arrive at your starting destination. The immediate area of South Cumberland under the so-called “subway” is referred to by locals and is also the location of The City of Cumberland Parks and Recreation Department offices. It is becoming less frequent, but older residents of Cumberland might remember when the area was originally called “Little Egypt”. The cache is an ammo can. Please enjoy The Gene Mason Sports Complex, especially the recent additions of the basketball courts, restrooms, boat launch and BMX Park. The C&O Canal Towpath boarders the Complex.
Directions to Mason Complex from I-68:
-Merge onto MD-51 S/E INDUSTRIAL BLVD via EXIT 43B toward AIRPORT.
-Turn RIGHT onto VIRGINIA AVE at the intersection of Industrial Boulevard and Virginia Avenue - This is also the longest set of lights within City Limits
-Travel “Under The Subway”
-Turn at your first left on E OFFUTT ST - There are signs for Mason Complex / Donahue Field
-Straight Back Past CSX to Parking Coordinates for cache
There are two parking coordinates:
Preferably at entrance: N 39 37.506
W 078 45.535
or at The BMX Park N 39 37.254
W 078 45.823
The City has and is continually improving is the 55-acre Riverside Recreation Complex consisting of a regulation baseball field, Little League field, softball field, and four tennis courts. This complex was dedicated and opened in the spring of 1952. Horseshoe pits and a small pavilion were added in summer 1990. Three outdoor sand volleyball courts were completed in 1995. The pavilion and volleyball courts were Eagle Scout projects. The fall of 1995 saw the beginning of the long-awaited Phase II Development at Riverside Rec, funded by Maryland Program Open Space and Community Block Grant Funds. In the spring of 2000, the Complex was rededicated and named the C. Eugene Mason Sports Complex. In the fall of 2000 construction began on a permanent restroom facility.
