Geocache Description:

The Cave Without A Name is the best kept secret among Texas’ show caves. Disguised by it’s rural location and lack of advertising, the cave has retained its quality.

The cave was discovered in the early part of the 20th century when steam was seen rising from the pit entrance one cold winter morning. In 1927, a goat fell through a hole into the cavern and the entrance was uncovered. This area hid a moonshine still during prohibition years. It has operated as a show cave since 1939, when a contest to name the cave was won by a local boy who felt the cave was too pretty to have a name. Over the years, however, the cave has been known by various other names, such as Century Caverns and Short Ranch Cave.

Estimates of the cave's age vary from 100 million up to 400 million years, when the land was covered by a shallow sea that carved out large underground cavities. A karst cave, it is one of the extensive stream caves in the lower member of the Glen Rose Formation that drain to the Guadalupe River.

The temperature in the cavern is a constant 66° F, and the cavern floor is approximately 100 feet below the surface. Cave Without A Name is at least 80 percent active and consists of a large corridor that is subdivided into four sections. The cavern contains many large formations that vary in color from white to amber, brown, and red due to mineral content. Some of the largest "bacon strips"in the US can be seen, as well as deposits resembling white grapes and other whimsical shapes. "The Grapes" are the only known formation of its kind in Texas.

The trail ends at a stream passage. Upstream, the cave has been surveyed nearly 3.5 miles through several sumps requiring scuba. Down stream it extends over 1800 feet to the entrance of Deadmans’s Cave. Like Cascade Caverns in the southern part of Kendall County, these caves have had little study or exploration.

The owners ask that you at least stop in the Gift Shop to say Hi. They know you are are hunting the cache because of the GPSr in your hand. You will find coupons for the tour in the cache.

I hope that you will thank them for letting us place the cache at the cave. Please purchase a cold drink or an ice cream bar to show your support. They even have cool glow-in-the-dark t-shirts. A good bit of work has been done since purchasing the cave in 1998 and the road, parking and gift shop have been improved . They have also created very interesting nature trails that are enjoyable to explore. Concerts, art shows and Christmas lighting will tempt you to return to the cave more often.

The camo ammo can is off the trail - be careful of rocky conditions, cacti and other thorns.

A tornado blew through in August 07, ripping the porch and the roof of the cave entrance completely off. Ask to see the photos.

Summer Hours: Memorial Day Through Labor Day 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Winter Hours: After Labor Day Up Until Memorial Day 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The tour takes approximately 60 minutes – well worth it!
