Lake Agnew Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Acid Rain: I hate to do this, since everyone enjoyed it and it was my first hide, but I cannot maintain this cache any longer. I used to visit the area every month, but now it's more like twice a year. I am probably going back there this coming weekend by concidence, but after a long mental debate, I decided it would not be fair to the finder next time this happens. Sorry to all who hadn't gotten here yet. If someone really thinks a cache should be at Agnew, you can always place one yourself. [:D]

Geocache Description:

An easy cache located 9 miles south and 3.5 miles west of Willow Lake, SD.

One of the easiest ways to get there is taking Grant Street (County 47) south out of town 9 miles. Eventually the road turns into 429th Ave. At the corner of 429th Ave and 199th St go 3.5 miles west until you get to Lake Agnew Pl. Take that road south into the park. You can park your vehicle at the entrance and walk in, or drive most of the way in. The road at one time used be to driveable straight to the cache, but trees have tipped over and you will have to walk at least part of the way.

Lake Agnew is a small man made lake. It's a local fishing hole and hunting area mostly known only to the locals. I haven't done any research on the history of the area. One of the finders has informed me that it used to be Lake Agnew State Park and the dam was either a WPA or a PWA project built in the 1930s (see 40's log entry). Today it is still managed by the SD Game, Fish, and Parks, but instead of a park it is designated as a game production area and the grounds are not maintained.

One thing to watch out for in the Summer is ticks. If you stick to the road, you shouldn't have a problem. If you are tempted to wander around, just make sure to do a tick check when you leave.

The cache is a small clear rubbermaid container. It started off with: 4 keychains, 3 pieces of Dentine Fire, fufu refrigerator magnet, pocket knife, name tag band, and a piece of cloth with a button on the end.
